The Loggia dei Lanzi, was where Michelangelo wanted the Florentines to display his David. Leonardo da Vinci supported this proposal. Alas, it did not happen, but the fact has made me consider the loggia and most important the statues it houses more seriously. I am going to take a lot of photographs in the loggia while I am in Florence, starting with what is for me “un capolavoro assoluto” of Italian sculpture, Benvenuto Cellini’s 18 feet high bronze, Perseus with the Head of Medusa. This triumphant Perseus should be regarded as a renaissance masterpiece as great if not greater than Michelangelo’s David.
